Animals Welfare Board of India

The Animal Welfare Board of India is a statutory advisory body on Animal Welfare Laws and promotes animal welfare. It established in 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (No. 59 of 1960), the Animal Welfare Board of India was started under the stewardship of Late Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, well known humanitarian. From ensuring that animal welfare laws in the country are diligently followed, to provide grants to Animal Welfare Organizations and to advise the Government of India on animal welfare issues, the Board has been the face of the animal welfare movement in the country for the last 50 years.

Governing Functions

AWBI acts as the Governing body for all the animal-related activities carried out by the individuals and animal N.G.O.s across the country. Several functions mentioned here are as follows.

  • To keep the law in force in India for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, advise the Central Government on the making of rules under the Act to prevent unnecessary pain or suffering to animals generally
  • cooperate with, and coordinate the work of, associations or bodies established for the purpose of preventing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals or for the protection of animals and birds.
  • To impart education in relation to the humane treatment of animals and encourage the formation of public opinion against the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering to animals and promote animal welfare through lectures, books, posters, cinematographic exhibitions, and the like.

Financial assistance

Animals Water Bowl Project (AWBP) Trust

  AWBP Trust is a registered non-profit trust that was started on April 14 April 2017, The vision of AWBP Trust is to create a platform where every street animal gets safe drinking water round the clock throughout the year. And connect humans with animals through continuous education programs.

RRSA India 

RRSA is a non-government animal welfare organization that provides medical care to un-owned domestic animals and runs a rehabilitation center for wild birds and small mammals. Visakha Society For Protection And Care Of Animals(V.S.P.C.A.) 

VSPCA is an international non-profit entity dedicated to sustaining animal and plant life in Visakhapatnam, including promoting biodiversity. People For Animals (P.F.A.)

PFA is India’s largest non-government organization, with a nationwide network of 26 hospitals, 165 units, 60 mobile units, and 2.5 Lakh members.      CUPA is a non-profit, non-government organization created in 1991 by Ms. Crystal Rogers. This British woman would take in suffering animals and provide a safe space for healing and happiness. Wildlife SOS was established in 1995 by a small group of individuals to protect and conserve India’s natural heritage, forest, and wildlife wealth. STRAW is a registered non-profit/non-government organization founded by Vasanti Kumar and Dinesh Kumar. Their core activity is the promotion of animal welfare through education. Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre (S.G.A.C.C.)

       SGACC is India’s oldest and Asia’s largest animal care center founded in 1980 in memory of Mrs. Ruthwell of New South Wales. The Bombay Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (B.S.P.C.A.)

The Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA), including the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, was established in 1874 and is over 144 years in existence. It’s the oldest animal welfare organization in India.

Blue Cross of Pune

The Blue Cross Society of Pune is a charitable trust registered in 1994. Blue Cross Pune is recognized by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). This was founded by Ms. Sunanda Das, Ms. Hilla Maitra, Mr. Subir Das, Dr. Phiroz Khambatta, and other animal lovers. Over twenty-five years, Blue Cross Pune has neutered and vaccinated more than 200,000 street and pet dogs.

Also, Blue Cross has built an Animal hospital on a 100,000sq.ft plot of land obtained on lease from the Pune Municipal Corporation at Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa.

Operates an animal hospital that provides numerous treatments for pet and stray animals.
